Secondary Math is not one-size-fits-all. A G1 student preparing for the SEC exam needs completely different content from a G3 student heading for A-Math. We keep streams in separate classes so every session is relevant.
Stream-specific
Yes. G1, G2, and G3 students each have their own class, so every lesson matches the exact syllabus and exam format your child is sitting.
S3 is where most students hit a wall — the syllabus gets significantly harder, A-Math is new, and SEC exam (or O-Level for the current Sec 4 cohort) prep begins. Students who build strong foundations in S1–S2 handle that jump far better. Starting early is the highest-leverage move a parent can make.
S1 is ideal — algebra gaps from the start of secondary compound quickly and are harder to fix later. That said, students who join in S3 or S4 can still benefit significantly from targeted exam preparation.
Stream-specific classes. Every lesson, worked example, and past-year paper is matched to your child's stream.
Bowen Secondary School was founded in 1982 and originally situated in Ang Mo Kio before moving to its present location at 2 Lorong Napiri in Hougang in December 1999. It is a government co-educational school that operates on a single-session timetable, serving approximately 1,500 students from a range of backgrounds.
The school's motto, "I Believe, Therefore I Am," reflects a focus on building self-confidence and personal agency. Its stated vision is to develop "a community of passionate learners, servant leaders, and champions of good," and the mission centres on nurturing learning, strengthening character, and encouraging service. Six core values — respect, responsibility, resilience, compassion, teamwork, and excellence — are represented by arrows in the school crest, with the school colours of blue and purple standing for trust and creativity.
Two signature programmes define Bowen's identity. The Applied Learning Programme (ALP) in Business and Entrepreneurship introduces students to social entrepreneurship through projects that emphasise creative problem-solving and empathy. The Learning for Life Programme (LLP) in Community Youth Leadership, known as the Bowen ChANgemakers Programme, gives students opportunities to lead service initiatives addressing real community needs. The school also offers bilingual education options and operates under the Full Subject-Based Banding system.
Entry to Bowen Secondary School at Secondary 1 is through the PSLE posting exercise or the Direct School Admission (DSA) scheme.
Based on the 2024 PSLE intake, the indicative Achievement Level (AL) cut-off points for non-affiliated students were: Posting Group 1 at 25 to 27, Posting Group 2 at 21 to 23, and Posting Group 3 at 10 to 15. These figures represent the score of the last student admitted in that cycle and may shift from year to year. Bowen has no affiliated primary schools, so there is no affiliation priority in admissions.
The DSA exercise allows Primary 6 students to apply for a place before PSLE results are released. Bowen accepts DSA applications in areas including Community Youth Leadership, Entrepreneurship, Marching Band, Badminton, and Football. Applications are submitted through the MOE DSA-Sec portal, typically between May and June, with shortlisted candidates invited for interviews, auditions, or trials. Successful applicants receive confirmed offers by September.
Bowen uses Full Subject-Based Banding (SBB), which means students can take individual subjects at different levels based on their strengths rather than being placed in a single fixed stream. Parents considering Bowen are encouraged to attend the school's open house, usually held in November, to tour the campus and speak with staff.
Bowen follows the national curriculum framework and prepares students for the GCE O-Level examinations, with Full Subject-Based Banding allowing personalised subject combinations across levels. Core subjects include English Language, Mathematics (Elementary and Additional), Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Combined Science), Social Studies, and Mother Tongue Languages (Chinese, Malay, and Tamil offered at basic, standard, or higher levels). Upper secondary electives cover Humanities subjects such as Geography, History, and Literature, alongside applied options like Nutrition and Food Science, Art, Design and Technology, and Exercise and Sports Science.
The school has maintained strong pass rates in key subjects, with particular strength in Mathematics and the Sciences. Recent cohorts have progressed to junior colleges and polytechnics, and at the 43rd Speech and Prize Ceremony in 2025, students were recognised for achievements at the national level, including a 3rd prize in the Live On Festival Essay Competition. The Boys' Brigade unit received the JM Fraser Award for Excellence (Silver).
The ALP in Business and Entrepreneurship provides students with STEM-oriented learning alongside practical exposure to enterprise and design thinking. Students aiming to strengthen their Mathematics foundation may benefit from structured support outside school. DeepThink, a math tuition centre, offers programmes aligned to the O-Level Mathematics and Additional Mathematics syllabuses that can complement what students learn at Bowen.
The campus includes smart classrooms with interactive technology, science and computer laboratories, a library, a multipurpose sports complex, and dedicated arts studios. The school has also incorporated environmentally conscious features into its facilities.
Co-Curricular Activities (CCAs) are a core part of student life at Bowen and serve as pathways for DSA admission. The school offers the following:
Sports: Badminton, Basketball (Boys), Netball (Girls), Football, Table Tennis (Boys), and Taekwondo.
Uniformed Groups: Boys' Brigade, Girl Guides, National Police Cadet Corps (NPCC), National Cadet Corps (NCC Land, Boys), and National Civil Defence Cadet Corps (NCDCC).
Performing Arts: Choir, Modern Dance, Indian Dance, Malay Dance, Marching Band, and English Drama.
Clubs and Societies: Art and Crafts, Media Resource Library, and Infocomm Technology (Media Production).
Additional CCAs include Community Youth Leadership and Entrepreneurship, both linked to the school's ChANgemakers and ALP programmes. Events such as Bowen FIESTA contribute to the school's community culture and give students opportunities to showcase their involvement.
Daily life at Bowen combines structured academic time with co-curricular engagement. Class sizes are approximately 40 students, and the school provides pastoral care through form teachers, a counselling team, anti-bullying programmes, and resilience workshops aligned with MOE well-being guidelines.
The school's culture emphasises leadership and values-driven participation. The ChANgemakers programme uses Design Thinking to develop students as empathetic, socially responsible leaders who work on service projects with community partners such as AWWA and Bright Vision Hospital. The AForte programme supports Normal Course students through enrichment modules, character development activities, and a Sports Discovery Programme.
For Secondary 2 and 3 students, the Bowen Horizons programme offers overseas learning trips with a focus on cultural exchange, values-in-action, and global awareness. Past destinations have included Taiwan, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Indonesia.
Parents and students transitioning to Secondary 1 are generally advised to establish consistent study routines early, join a CCA promptly for social connection and stress relief, and make use of parent-teacher meetings to stay informed about academic progress. The school operates Monday to Friday, with general office hours from 8.30 am to 5.30 pm.
