DeepThink's Secondary Math programme supports Hougang Secondary School students with stream-specific classes for G1, G2, and G3.
Hougang Secondary School has been a cornerstone of education in the Hougang community since its establishment in 1987 as a government co-educational school. Operating on a single-session basis, it welcomes both boys and girls from diverse backgrounds, fostering an inclusive space where every student can thrive.
G1, G2, and G3 students are in separate classes, each covering the content and exam format for that stream
O-Level, N-Level, and SEC exam preparation built in from S3, matched to the stream your child is sitting
E-Math and A-Math taught in separate classes from S3 onwards
S1 to S5 coverage so your child can stay with DeepThink for their entire secondary journey without switching centres
Secondary Math is not one-size-fits-all. A G1 student preparing for the SEC exam needs completely different content from a G3 student heading for A-Math. We keep streams in separate classes so every session is relevant.
Stream-specific
Yes. G1, G2, and G3 students each have their own class, so every lesson matches the exact syllabus and exam format your child is sitting.
S3 is where most students hit a wall — the syllabus gets significantly harder, A-Math is new, and SEC exam (or O-Level for the current Sec 4 cohort) prep begins. Students who build strong foundations in S1–S2 handle that jump far better. Starting early is the highest-leverage move a parent can make.
S1 is ideal — algebra gaps from the start of secondary compound quickly and are harder to fix later. That said, students who join in S3 or S4 can still benefit significantly from targeted exam preparation.
Stream-specific classes. Every lesson, worked example, and past-year paper is matched to your child's stream.
Hougang Secondary School is a government co-educational institution that was established in 1987, serving students in the Hougang neighbourhood. The school runs on a single-session model and admits both boys and girls. Its motto, "Nurturing Hougeans to Serve with Pride and Excellence," reflects its dual emphasis on academic growth and character formation.
The school does not hold autonomous or SAP status and has no formal affiliations with any primary schools. Two signature programmes define much of its educational approach: the Applied Learning Programme (ALP) in STEM, branded "HS Innovates, For Life!", which engages students in hands-on projects with real-world applications, and the Learning for Life Programme (LLP) in Community Youth Leadership, titled "Values in Action, a Hougean Way of Life," which integrates social responsibility and service into the student experience.
Admission to Hougang Secondary School at Secondary 1 follows the national PSLE posting exercise. As a government school with no primary school affiliations, entry is based solely on PSLE Achievement Level scores. For the 2025 intake, the indicative cut-off points for non-affiliated students were: Posting Group 3 (14-20), Posting Group 2 (21-24), and Posting Group 1 (25-28). These figures represent the score of the last student admitted in that cycle and may shift from year to year.
The school also participates in the Direct School Admission (DSA) scheme, which allows Primary 6 students to apply based on demonstrated talent in areas such as sports, the arts, and leadership. Applications are submitted through the MOE DSA-Sec Portal at no cost, typically opening around May each year. Prospective applicants should check the school's website for specific DSA categories and requirements. Students who accept a DSA offer are committed to attending the school.
Hougang Secondary School implements Full Subject-Based Banding (FSBB), which allows students to take individual subjects at different demand levels (G1, G2, or G3) based on their strengths. The school does not offer an Integrated Programme; all students follow the standard secondary pathway leading to O-Level examinations.
The academic programme at Hougang Secondary School follows the national curriculum framework. At lower secondary, students take a broad range of core subjects including English Language, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies before selecting specialisations at upper secondary. Upper secondary subject combinations include Science streams (Physics/Chemistry or Chemistry/Biology), Humanities options (Social Studies paired with Geography, History, or Literature in Malay), and electives such as Principles of Accounts, Nutrition and Food Science, Computing, and Design and Technology. Both Elementary and Additional Mathematics are available. Mother tongue languages offered include Chinese and Malay at various levels, from Basic to Higher.
The school's STEM-focused ALP, "HS Innovates, For Life!", has been recognised in national innovation challenges and provides students with practical project-based learning opportunities. The Subject-Based Banding system ensures that students can study individual subjects at the level that matches their ability, supporting personalised academic pathways.
For students seeking additional support in Mathematics — whether at Elementary or Additional level — DeepThink, a specialist math tuition centre, offers structured programmes aligned to the O-Level syllabus that can complement the school's teaching.
The school campus features smart classrooms equipped with interactive technology, a library, dedicated science and computer laboratories, arts studios, and a sports complex. As of 2025, the school has also developed STEM makerspaces linked to its Applied Learning Programme.
Co-Curricular Activities (CCAs) are a core part of student life, with more than 20 options available across four categories:

Clubs and Societies: Debating, English Drama, Infocomm Technology (Media Production), Leadership, STEM.
A number of these CCAs have representation at national-level competitions. CCA involvement also supports DSA applications for incoming students and contributes to the school's broader character development goals.
Hougang Secondary School operates on a single-session schedule, with the school day typically beginning at 7:30 a.m. Class sizes are around 40 students, and the school provides pastoral care through dedicated teams that offer academic guidance and emotional support. Anti-bullying programmes, inclusivity initiatives, and resilience-building activities are part of the school's approach to student well-being, in line with MOE guidelines.
The school's culture centres on what it calls "Hougean pride" — a shared identity built around values of service and mutual respect. Peer support networks and mindfulness activities are among the well-being resources available to students.
For families preparing for the transition from primary to secondary school, establishing consistent study routines early, encouraging participation in a CCA that aligns with the student's interests, and attending parent-teacher meetings are practical steps that can help ease the adjustment.
