The school was renamed Montfort School in 1959 after St. Louis de Montfort, and it became a full secondary institution in 1992 following its move to the present Hougang campus. It operates as a government-aided Roman Catholic all-boys school under the stewardship of the Montfort Brothers of St. Gabriel and the Catholic Archdiocese of Singapore. Montfort Secondary School is a boys-only institution offering the Express, Normal (Academic), and Normal (Technical) streams under the Full Subject-Based Banding (FSBB) framework, which allows students to take individual subjects at different levels based on their strengths.

Based on the 2024 intake, the indicative PSLE cut-off points were as follows. For Posting Group 1 (Express): affiliated students 26 to 28, non-affiliated students 25 to 28. For Posting Group 2 (Normal Academic): affiliated students 22 to 25, non-affiliated students 22 to 24. For Posting Group 3 (Normal Technical): affiliated students 18 to 22, non-affiliated students 12 to 22. These figures reflect the scores of the last admitted students and may shift each year depending on the applicant pool.

Students from Montfort Junior School receive priority consideration through the affiliation benefit, which can result in more favourable entry scores. Direct School Admission (DSA) applications are submitted through the MOE portal, typically between May and June each year at no cost. DSA categories at Montfort include sports such as rugby, basketball, football, softball, badminton, and wushu, as well as performing arts and leadership areas that align with the school's LLP focus.

The school does not offer the Integrated Programme. Students follow the O-Level track and may proceed to affiliated pathways at Catholic Junior College or apply to polytechnics and other post-secondary institutions.
