National Junior College (NJC) holds the distinction of being Singapore's first government junior college, having opened its doors in 1969. Admission Process

Entry to National Junior College at the JC level is primarily through the Joint Admissions Exercise (JAE), which uses GCE O-Level L1R5 aggregate scores. For the 2025 JAE intake, the indicative net cut-off points were 3 to 7 for Science streams and 5 to 8 for Arts streams. These figures are based on the most recent posting cycle and may shift annually depending on applicant demand and performance.

Students may also gain admission through Direct School Admission for Junior Colleges (DSA-JC). This pathway is open to students with demonstrated strengths in academics, the arts, sports, or leadership. Applications typically open in May each year via the MOE DSA portal, and successful candidates may receive confirmed offers before their O-Level results are released. Selection is based on trials, interviews, or portfolio assessments, depending on the talent area.

For the Integrated Programme, students enter at the Secondary 1 level through the Secondary 1 Posting Exercise. IP students proceed through a six-year curriculum that bypasses the O-Level examinations entirely, moving directly to A-Level preparation with an emphasis on inquiry-based and holistic learning.

Curriculum and Academic Programme

NJC offers 19 H2 subjects at the A-Level, spanning the sciences, humanities, and mathematics. The college provides H1, H2, and H3 options, including specialised H3 subjects offered in partnership with NUS and NTU — such as NUS Geopolitics, NTU Semiconductor Physics, and extended research programmes in the sciences. Project Work is compulsory for all students, and subject combinations can be tailored to individual interests across science and humanities streams.

The college's A-Level track record reflects consistent academic strength. In the Class of 2023 results (released in 2024), more than one in three students achieved at least three H2 distinctions, while over one in four attained five or more distinctions. Across all 19 H2 subjects, at least half the students scored A or B grades. NJC has received the MOE School Excellence Award recognising its value-added academic outcomes.

Mathematics is a particular strength at NJC. The H2 Mathematics curriculum incorporates problem-solving workshops and real-world modelling exercises, and students can pursue H2 Further Mathematics with connections to data science and artificial intelligence applications. NJC offers more than 40 co-curricular activities (CCAs) across four categories. In sports, options include badminton, basketball, canoeing, netball, football, softball, squash, track and field, table tennis, floorball, touch rugby, shooting, and rock-wall climbing — with several teams competing at zonal and national levels. Canoeing, in particular, has produced national-level results.

The performing arts programme covers Chinese Orchestra, Choir, Guitar Ensemble, String Ensemble, Guzheng Ensemble, Modern Dance, Chinese Dance, Indian Dance, Malay Dance, and Concert Band. A number of these groups have earned distinctions at the Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) Arts Presentation, and the String Ensemble has participated in international tours.

Clubs and societies include Audio Visual Aid, English Language Drama and Debating, Community Service, Design and Innovation, Environmental Science, Infocomm Technology (Media Production), and Physical Science. Language-based drama and debating groups in Chinese, Malay, and Indian languages are also available. CCA participation supports holistic development and is factored into university admission profiles.
