How DeepThink supports New Town Secondary School students

  • G1, G2, and G3 students are in separate classes, each covering the content and exam format for that stream

  • O-Level, N-Level, and SEC exam preparation built in from S3, matched to the stream your child is sitting

  • E-Math and A-Math taught in separate classes from S3 onwards

  • S1 to S5 coverage so your child can stay with DeepThink for their entire secondary journey without switching centres

What your child gets at DeepThink

Secondary Math is not one-size-fits-all. A G1 student preparing for the SEC exam needs completely different content from a G3 student heading for A-Math. We keep streams in separate classes so every session is relevant.

Frequently asked questions

Clear answers for parents

Does my child's stream affect which class they join at DeepThink?

Yes. G1, G2, and G3 students each have their own class, so every lesson matches the exact syllabus and exam format your child is sitting.

My child is doing okay in S1/S2 but I'm worried about the jump to S3. Is it too early to start?

S3 is where most students hit a wall — the syllabus gets significantly harder, A-Math is new, and SEC exam (or O-Level for the current Sec 4 cohort) prep begins. Students who build strong foundations in S1–S2 handle that jump far better. Starting early is the highest-leverage move a parent can make.

When is the right time for a secondary student to start tuition?

S1 is ideal — algebra gaps from the start of secondary compound quickly and are harder to fix later. That said, students who join in S3 or S4 can still benefit significantly from targeted exam preparation.

What makes DeepThink different for secondary students?

Stream-specific classes. Every lesson, worked example, and past-year paper is matched to your child's stream.

School Overview

New Town Secondary School (NTSS) is a government co-educational secondary school that began operations in 1988. Located in Singapore's northwest district, NTSS serves students across all posting groups and follows a single-session model. The school's vision, Confident Learners and Caring Leaders for a Better Tomorrow, shapes its approach to education, while its mission centres on nurturing talents, transforming minds, striving for success, and serving the community.

NTSS is guided by the SPARK framework, which stands for Self-belief, Passion, Resilience, Knowledge, and Kindness. These values inform the school's programmes, daily routines, and approach to character development. As a non-affiliated school, NTSS does not grant priority admission to students from any particular primary school, meaning all applicants are assessed on an equal basis during the Secondary 1 Posting Exercise. The school offers distinctive programmes including the Enhanced Art Programme (EAP), which is available at only nine secondary schools in Singapore and prepares upper secondary students for the GCE O-Level Art examination.

Admission Process

Entry to NTSS at Secondary 1 is primarily through the MOE Posting Exercise, which allocates students based on their PSLE Achievement Level (AL) scores. As NTSS is non-affiliated, there are no priority admission pathways from feeder primary schools.

For the 2025 intake, the indicative PSLE cut-off score ranges were as follows:

Posting Group 3: 13 to 21

Posting Group 2: 21 to 25

Posting Group 1: 25 to 30

The last admitted student in Posting Group 1 had a score better than 30, but remaining vacancies allowed the cut-off to settle at 30. These figures are finalised after the Secondary 1 Posting Exercise and may shift from year to year depending on application volume.

NTSS also participates in the Direct School Admission (DSA) scheme, accepting applications in areas such as visual arts and community youth leadership. DSA applications are submitted through the MOE DSA portal before PSLE results are released.

The school operates under Full Subject-Based Banding (SBB), which allows students to take individual subjects at different levels (G1, G2, or G3) based on their demonstrated strengths, rather than being placed in a fixed stream. NTSS follows the four-year O-Level track and does not offer an Integrated Programme.

Curriculum and Academic Programme

The academic programme at NTSS covers core subjects including English Language, Mathematics, Additional Mathematics, the Sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Biology), and Humanities (Social Studies with Geography, History, or Literature). Mother Tongue languages offered include Chinese, Malay, and Tamil, available at standard and higher levels.

Students may choose from several elective combinations depending on their posting group and interests. Science options include Physics with Chemistry or Chemistry with Biology. Practical subject electives include Nutrition and Food Science, Electronics, and Design and Technology. The Enhanced Art Programme provides a structured pathway for students with a strong interest in visual arts, leading to the GCE O-Level Art examination.

Two signature programmes complement the standard curriculum. The Applied Learning Programme (ALP), titled Digital Communicators, Change Makers, develops digital literacy skills through interdisciplinary project work. The Learning for Life Programme (LLP), Nurturing Leaders through SPARK, focuses on community youth leadership and encourages students to apply their values in service-oriented contexts.

NTSS has maintained steady O-Level results, with pass rates in Mathematics and the Sciences that compare favourably to schools in a similar band. Graduates have progressed to junior colleges and polytechnics across Singapore. For families seeking additional support in Mathematics, DeepThink is a math tuition centre that offers programmes aligned to the O-Level syllabus, which some NTSS families have found useful alongside the school's own academic support structures.

Facilities and Co-Curricular Activities

The NTSS campus includes smart classrooms fitted with interactive technology, science and computer laboratories, a school library, art studios supporting the Enhanced Art Programme, and a sports complex. Media production suites are also available for students in the Infocomm Technology CCA. The school runs on a single-session timetable.

Co-Curricular Activities (CCAs) are a key part of student life at NTSS, with more than 20 options available across four categories:

Sports: Basketball, Badminton, Fencing, Netball, Football, Softball, Table Tennis

Uniformed Groups: Girl Guides, National Police Cadet Corps (NPCC), National Cadet Corps (NCC Land)

Performing Arts: Guzheng Ensemble, Modern Dance, Chinese Dance, Concert Band

Clubs and Societies: Art and Crafts, Media Resource Library, Infocomm Technology (Media Production), Leadership, Visual Arts

CCA participation contributes to character development, teamwork, and leadership skills. Students who demonstrate strong ability in their CCA may also use their achievements to support a DSA application to post-secondary institutions.

Student Life and School Culture

NTSS fosters a supportive school environment shaped by the SPARK values of Self-belief, Passion, Resilience, Knowledge, and Kindness. As a co-educational school, it serves both boys and girls in a single-session setting. Class sizes are approximately 40 students, and the school provides pastoral care through form teachers and dedicated support staff, including Special Educational Needs Officers who assist students with additional learning requirements.

Student well-being is addressed through structured programmes aligned with MOE guidelines, covering areas such as resilience building, peer relationships, and anti-bullying. Character and Citizenship Education (CCE) is integrated into the school calendar, with activities designed to reinforce values and social responsibility.

For students entering Secondary 1, the school runs an orientation programme to help with the transition from primary school. Parents and incoming students are encouraged to attend the school's Open House, which provides an opportunity to meet staff, learn about programmes, and tour the campus. Building consistent study routines early, making use of a planner for managing assignments and CCA commitments, and participating in orientation activities are practical steps that help new students settle in.
