How DeepThink supports Northlight School students

  • G1, G2, and G3 students are in separate classes, each covering the content and exam format for that stream

  • O-Level, N-Level, and SEC exam preparation built in from S3, matched to the stream your child is sitting

  • E-Math and A-Math taught in separate classes from S3 onwards

  • S1 to S4 coverage so your child can stay with DeepThink for their entire secondary journey without switching centres

What your child gets at DeepThink

Secondary Math is not one-size-fits-all. A G1 student preparing for the SEC exam needs completely different content from a G3 student heading for A-Math. We keep streams in separate classes so every session is relevant.

Frequently asked questions

Clear answers for parents

Does my child's stream affect which class they join at DeepThink?

Yes. G1, G2, and G3 students each have their own class, so every lesson matches the exact syllabus and exam format your child is sitting.

My child is doing okay in S1/S2 but I'm worried about the jump to S3. Is it too early to start?

S3 is where most students hit a wall — the syllabus gets significantly harder, A-Math is new, and SEC exam (or O-Level for the current Sec 4 cohort) prep begins. Students who build strong foundations in S1–S2 handle that jump far better. Starting early is the highest-leverage move a parent can make.

When is the right time for a secondary student to start tuition?

S1 is ideal — algebra gaps from the start of secondary compound quickly and are harder to fix later. That said, students who join in S3 or S4 can still benefit significantly from targeted exam preparation.

What makes DeepThink different for secondary students?

Stream-specific classes. Every lesson, worked example, and past-year paper is matched to your child's stream.

School Overview

NorthLight School began operations in January 2007, having been established by the Ministry of Education (MOE) in 2006 as Singapore's first specialised institution of its kind. Located in Kallang, NorthLight is a co-educational government school that serves students who benefit from a hands-on, practice-oriented approach to learning rather than a conventional academic track. The school's motto, "Shine Brightly," reflects its commitment to helping young people develop confidence, motivation, and strong moral values as they work towards employment or further vocational training.

As a specialised school, NorthLight occupies a distinct position in Singapore's education landscape. Its programme combines academic fundamentals with industry-relevant vocational tracks, supported by close partnerships with the Institute of Technical Education (ITE). The curriculum prioritises applied skills and real-world readiness over traditional examination-based assessment, making it well suited for students whose strengths lie in practical learning.

Admission Process

NorthLight School operates outside the standard Secondary 1 Posting Exercise. There is no conventional PSLE cut-off point (COP) for entry. The school is open to students who sat for the PSLE but whose results fall outside Posting Groups 1, 2, and 3, indicating that an alternative educational pathway may better serve their needs. Interested families apply directly through the school's website.

Admission is managed through a Joint Admission Process. Following the release of PSLE results, the school typically holds briefing sessions in late November where parents and students can learn about the programme, attend interviews, and tour the campus. No primary school affiliations apply, so all applicants are considered on equal footing.

NorthLight runs a four-year programme that leads to qualifications equivalent to the N-Level standard, with graduates typically progressing to ITE courses or apprenticeships. The school does not offer an Integrated Programme (IP) or participate in Direct School Admission (DSA). Full Subject-Based Banding (SBB) is available, allowing students to take individual subjects at different levels according to their ability.

Parents considering NorthLight should attend the school's Open House events, usually held between May and June, which can be registered for on the school website. Speaking with current families at school events or MOE forums can also provide helpful perspective on whether the programme is the right fit.

Curriculum and Academic Programme

The curriculum at NorthLight blends core academic subjects with vocational training designed to prepare students for the workforce. Core subjects include English, Mathematics (with an emphasis on Numeracy), basic Sciences, and Humanities. Students also choose from vocational clusters such as Retail, Hospitality, and Maintenance, engaging in practical modules like Food Preparation, Electrical System Maintenance, and Guest Service Excellence.

Academic progress at NorthLight is measured primarily through graduate outcomes rather than conventional examination results. Over 95 percent of recent cohorts have gone on to ITE programmes, polytechnic courses, or direct employment. The school has received national recognition as a model for applied learning, and its alumni include individuals who have earned awards such as the Lee Hsien Loong Award for Special Achievement.

Specialised programmes span areas including plumbing and refrigeration maintenance, bilingual communication skills, and other STEM-related modules. These are structured to build practical competence without the pressures of a traditional examination-heavy system.

For students at NorthLight who want additional support with their Mathematics and Numeracy work, DeepThink is a math tuition centre that offers structured programmes suited to building foundational skills and confidence in the subject.

Facilities and Co-Curricular Activities

NorthLight's campus includes purpose-built workshops for vocational trades, air-conditioned laboratories for culinary and maintenance training, a well-stocked library, and multipurpose sports halls. The school has invested in digital learning tools to support experiential and applied education.

Co-Curricular Activities (CCAs) form an important part of student development at NorthLight, with more than 15 options available across four categories.

Sports and Games include Basketball (Boys), Netball (Girls and Boys), Football (Girls and Boys), Track and Field, Sepaktakraw (Boys), and Floorball (Boys).

Performing Arts options include Modern Dance (Girls), English Drama (Girls and Boys), and Art and Crafts (Girls and Boys).

Uniformed Groups consist of Girl Guides (Girls) and the National Civil Defence Cadet Corps (NCDCC) (Girls and Boys).

Clubs and Societies cover Entrepreneurship, Environmental Science, Food and Consumer Education, and Reading and Writing (all open to Girls and Boys).

Many of these CCAs connect directly to the school's vocational modules, reinforcing practical skills while also developing teamwork, leadership, and personal responsibility.

Student Life and School Culture

NorthLight fosters a supportive school culture centred on helping every student feel valued and capable of growth. The school day runs from approximately 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM, with structured lessons complemented by wellness breaks. Class sizes are kept to around 20 to 25 students, and the teacher-to-student ratio is favourable, enabling more personalised attention than is typical in larger mainstream schools.

Pastoral care is a core element of the NorthLight experience. Special Educational Needs Officers are available to support students with additional requirements, and counselling services address both academic and personal well-being. The school takes an active approach to fostering inclusivity and addressing issues such as bullying, in line with MOE guidelines.

The teaching philosophy at NorthLight emphasises learning through authentic, real-world experiences. Students engage with industry simulations and applied projects that make lessons tangible and relevant. Parents and students consistently note the close-knit, family-oriented atmosphere as one of the school's defining qualities.

For families preparing for the transition to NorthLight, encouraging early involvement in CCAs can help students build friendships and settle in. Making use of the school's counselling resources is also a practical step for managing any adjustment challenges.
