School Overview

Orchid Park Secondary School (OPSS) is a government co-educational institution that began operations in January 1999, initially housed at the Woodlands Ring Secondary School site. The school relocated to its permanent campus in Yishun by September of the same year and was officially opened in 2001. Starting with an initial intake of 360 students and 16 teaching staff, the school has since grown into a well-established single-session secondary school.

The school operates under the motto "Blossoming with Pride, Serving with Heart" and is guided by the "6 Everys" philosophy — every child matters, every teacher cares, every moment counts, every effort is valued, every success is celebrated, and every challenge is an opportunity. OPSS offers two signature programmes: the Applied Learning Programme (ALP) in Aesthetics, known as ARTopIA, which combines visual arts with technology to encourage creative expression; and the Learning for Life Programme (LLP) in Community Youth Leadership, delivered through the Community OutReach Education (CORE) initiative. The school also runs an Enhanced Art Programme for students with a strong interest in the visual arts.

Admission Process

Students are admitted to OPSS primarily through the annual Secondary 1 posting exercise following the PSLE. Based on the 2024 PSLE Achievement Level (AL) scoring system (where lower scores indicate stronger performance), the indicative cut-off points for the 2025 intake were approximately 18 for Posting Group 3, 23 for Posting Group 2, and 27 for Posting Group 1. OPSS does not have any affiliated primary schools, so there is no affiliation bonus during the admissions process.

The Direct School Admission (DSA) scheme provides an alternative pathway for Primary 6 students with particular strengths in areas such as sports, visual arts, leadership, or uniformed groups. Applications are submitted through the centralised MOE DSA-Sec Portal, which typically opens around the middle of the year for entry in the following January. Students who accept a DSA offer are committed to the school for the duration of the programme.

From the 2024 Secondary 1 cohort onwards, OPSS implements Full Subject-Based Banding (Full SBB), which allows students to study individual subjects at G1, G2, or G3 levels according to their aptitude. This replaces the previous Express, Normal Academic, and Normal Technical streams. Students still sit for the GCE O-Level or N-Level examinations at the end of their secondary education.

Curriculum and Academic Programme

The academic programme at OPSS follows the MOE national curriculum and covers core subjects including English Language, Mathematics (Elementary and Additional), the Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics), and the Humanities (Geography, History, Social Studies). Additional subject options include Principles of Accounts, Nutrition and Food Science, Design and Technology, Computer Applications, Elements of Business Skills, Literature in English, and Art. Mother Tongue Languages — Chinese, Malay, and Tamil — are offered, with Higher Mother Tongue options available for eligible students.

The school's ALP in Aesthetics (ARTopIA), introduced in 2011, integrates visual arts learning with technology-based approaches across the curriculum. STEM-oriented project work and leadership development modules complement the core academic programme. Under Full SBB, students have the flexibility to take subjects at different levels, which supports more personalised learning.

Facilities and Co-Curricular Activities

The OPSS campus includes classrooms fitted with interactive technology, science and computer laboratories, a library, a sports complex, and dedicated arts studios. The school also has Special Educational Needs Officers on site to support students with additional learning needs.

Co-Curricular Activities (CCAs) are compulsory for all students from Secondary 1 and span four broad categories:

Sports and Games: Basketball, Netball, Football, Wushu, and Floorball.

Uniformed Groups: Boys' Brigade, Girls' Brigade, National Police Cadet Corps (NPCC), National Cadet Corps (Sea), and National Civil Defence Cadet Corps (NCDCC).

Performing Arts: Guitar Ensemble, Modern Dance, English Drama, and Concert Band.

Clubs and Societies: Art and Crafts, Infocomm Technology, Leadership, and Visual Arts.

The CORE Programme, linked to the school's LLP, provides all students with structured community service opportunities. CCA participation contributes to character development and can support future DSA or post-secondary applications.
