It became a Special Assistance Plan (SAP) school in 1979, gained autonomous status in 1994, and launched its 6-year Integrated Programme (IP) in 2006. Admission Process

Entry to River Valley High School at Secondary 1 is through two main channels: the PSLE posting exercise and the Direct School Admission (DSA) scheme.

For the PSLE route, admission is based on Achievement Level (AL) scores. The indicative cut-off for the Integrated Programme for non-affiliated students ranges from AL 4(D) to 8(M), where D, M, and P refer to Higher Chinese Language grades of Distinction, Merit, and Pass respectively. These figures reflect the score of the last student admitted in the most recent posting cycle and may vary from year to year. RVHS does not maintain affiliations with any primary school, so there is no priority admission pathway through feeder schools.

The DSA scheme enables students to secure a place before PSLE results are released, based on demonstrated ability in areas such as leadership, sports, or the arts. Applications are submitted through the MOE DSA portal, which typically opens in May to June each year. Selection involves trials, interviews, or portfolio assessments depending on the talent category. Admissions are based solely on PSLE scores or DSA — there are no affiliation-based bonus points for any primary school.

Curriculum and Academic Programme

RVHS operates a 6-year Integrated Programme leading to the GCE A-Levels. The IP structure provides continuity from lower secondary through to junior college, enabling students to engage with advanced content earlier than they would in a conventional secondary-to-JC pathway. In 2023, one in three students achieved five or more distinctions, and half the cohort scored 83 or more University Admission Score (UAS) points. H2 Mathematics distinction rates among top-performing students have been in the 50 to 60 percent range. Over 80 percent of graduates gain admission to a local university, and a notable proportion receive scholarships to universities overseas.

Specialised academic tracks include the Bicultural Studies Programme, which develops bilingual and cross-cultural competencies through electives, overseas immersions, and structured study of Chinese language and culture.
