Sembawang Secondary School, established in January 1999, was founded to meet the growing educational needs of the burgeoning Sembawang community as Singapore’s northern region expanded. As a co-educational government school operating in a single session, it caters to students from diverse backgrounds, fostering an inclusive space for both boys and girls.
G1, G2, and G3 students are in separate classes, each covering the content and exam format for that stream
O-Level, N-Level, and SEC exam preparation built in from S3, matched to the stream your child is sitting
E-Math and A-Math taught in separate classes from S3 onwards
S1 to S5 coverage so your child can stay with DeepThink for their entire secondary journey without switching centres
Secondary Math is not one-size-fits-all. A G1 student preparing for the SEC exam needs completely different content from a G3 student heading for A-Math. We keep streams in separate classes so every session is relevant.
Stream-specific
Yes. G1, G2, and G3 students each have their own class, so every lesson matches the exact syllabus and exam format your child is sitting.
S3 is where most students hit a wall — the syllabus gets significantly harder, A-Math is new, and SEC exam (or O-Level for the current Sec 4 cohort) prep begins. Students who build strong foundations in S1–S2 handle that jump far better. Starting early is the highest-leverage move a parent can make.
S1 is ideal — algebra gaps from the start of secondary compound quickly and are harder to fix later. That said, students who join in S3 or S4 can still benefit significantly from targeted exam preparation.
Stream-specific classes. Every lesson, worked example, and past-year paper is matched to your child's stream.
Sembawang Secondary School opened its doors in January 1999, established to serve the expanding residential population in Singapore's northern Sembawang district. It operates as a government co-educational school running a single session, welcoming students of all backgrounds. The school's motto, "Strive, Serve and Soar," speaks to its emphasis on effort, giving back to the community, and reaching one's potential.
The school's educational approach centres on developing reflective learners and contributing citizens — students who demonstrate integrity, resilience, and empathy. Its vision of nurturing leaders and change makers is supported by two signature programmes. The Applied Learning Programme (ALP) in Humanities develops Critical and Inventive Thinking through Media Literacy, while the Learning for Life Programme (LLP) focuses on Community Youth Leadership. Together, these programmes encourage students to apply creative and analytical skills to real-world situations beyond the classroom.
Entry to Sembawang Secondary School is primarily through the annual PSLE posting exercise. The indicative PSLE cut-off points for the 2025 intake are: Posting Group 3 (12 to 22), Posting Group 2 (21 to 25), and Posting Group 1 (25 to 29) for non-affiliated students. These figures reflect the scores of the last admitted students in each group and may shift each year based on demand.
The school also participates in the Direct School Admission (DSA) scheme, with Leadership as a talent area. Students who have held roles such as prefect, peer support leader, or CCA captain may be well-suited for this pathway. DSA applications are submitted through the MOE DSA-Sec portal, typically opening around May each year.
Sembawang Secondary follows the O-Level track and implements Full Subject-Based Banding (SBB), which allows students to take individual subjects at different levels according to their strengths. The school does not offer an Integrated Programme. Open house sessions are usually held between May and June, giving families a chance to tour the campus and speak with staff.
The academic programme at Sembawang Secondary follows the MOE national curriculum with a range of core and elective subjects. Core offerings include English Language, Mathematics, Additional Mathematics, the Sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Biology), and Humanities (Social Studies, Geography, History). Students can also choose from electives such as Art, Music, Principles of Accounts, Nutrition and Food Science, and Higher Chinese, with subject combinations available under the Full Subject-Based Banding framework.
In 2024, the school reported strong O-Level results, with many students achieving distinctions in Mathematics and the Sciences. Pass rates in core subjects have consistently exceeded 90 percent. Students have also earned recognition in national competitions, including Certificates of Distinction at the 2023 National Design Challenge. Graduates from the school have gone on to junior colleges and polytechnics, with several citing the school's bilingual programmes and STEM initiatives as formative experiences.
The ALP in Humanities enriches the curriculum by building media literacy and analytical skills, while the LLP provides structured leadership development. For families seeking additional support in Mathematics, DeepThink is a math tuition centre that offers programmes aligned to the O-Level syllabus, which some Sembawang Secondary students have used to strengthen their preparation.
The school campus includes barrier-free facilities, smart classrooms with interactive technology, a well-stocked library, science and computer laboratories, and a sports complex catering to both indoor and outdoor activities. Eco-friendly spaces have been added in recent years to support sustainability-related projects.
Co-Curricular Activities (CCAs) are organised across four categories:
Sports: Badminton, Netball (Girls), Football (Boys), Volleyball, and Floorball.
Uniformed Groups: Boys' Brigade (Boys), Girls' Brigade (Girls), National Police Cadet Corps (NPCC), and National Cadet Corps Sea (Boys).
Performing Arts: Chinese Dance (Girls), Malay Dance, and Concert Band.
Clubs and Societies: Audio Visual Aid, Infocomm Technology (Media Production), and Robotics.
Students also take on leadership roles through the Student Council and House system, and participate in community service projects. Several CCA teams performed well at the 2024 National School Games, with notable results in both B and C Division competitions. CCA participation contributes to character development and can support DSA applications to post-secondary institutions.
Student life at Sembawang Secondary is shaped by a caring and inclusive environment. Classes typically have 35 to 40 students, and the school maintains a structured daily routine that balances academic work with adequate breaks. Pastoral care programmes address student well-being, including mental health support and peer mediation for conflict resolution.
The school has Special Educational Needs (SEN) officers on staff and provides barrier-free access throughout the campus, supporting students with mild special needs within the mainstream curriculum. Resilience-building workshops and values education are woven into the school calendar, reinforcing the school's commitment to developing empathetic and responsible individuals.
Community engagement is a visible part of school culture — students have participated in initiatives such as distributing eco-bags to neighbourhood residents. For students transitioning from primary school, the orientation programme and CCA sign-ups provide early opportunities to form friendships, while establishing consistent study routines can help ease the adjustment to secondary school life.
