How DeepThink supports Serangoon Secondary School students

  • G1, G2, and G3 students are in separate classes, each covering the content and exam format for that stream

  • O-Level, N-Level, and SEC exam preparation built in from S3, matched to the stream your child is sitting

  • E-Math and A-Math taught in separate classes from S3 onwards

  • S1 to S5 coverage so your child can stay with DeepThink for their entire secondary journey without switching centres

What your child gets at DeepThink

Secondary Math is not one-size-fits-all. A G1 student preparing for the SEC exam needs completely different content from a G3 student heading for A-Math. We keep streams in separate classes so every session is relevant.

Frequently asked questions

Clear answers for parents

Does my child's stream affect which class they join at DeepThink?

Yes. G1, G2, and G3 students each have their own class, so every lesson matches the exact syllabus and exam format your child is sitting.

My child is doing okay in S1/S2 but I'm worried about the jump to S3. Is it too early to start?

S3 is where most students hit a wall — the syllabus gets significantly harder, A-Math is new, and SEC exam (or O-Level for the current Sec 4 cohort) prep begins. Students who build strong foundations in S1–S2 handle that jump far better. Starting early is the highest-leverage move a parent can make.

When is the right time for a secondary student to start tuition?

S1 is ideal — algebra gaps from the start of secondary compound quickly and are harder to fix later. That said, students who join in S3 or S4 can still benefit significantly from targeted exam preparation.

What makes DeepThink different for secondary students?

Stream-specific classes. Every lesson, worked example, and past-year paper is matched to your child's stream.

School Overview

Serangoon Secondary School (SSS) was established in 1928 as Serangoon English School, originally serving as the sole government co-educational institution in colonial-era Singapore. During its early decades, the school functioned as a feeder to Raffles Institution. In 2001, SSS moved to its current campus in Hougang, where it continues to operate as a government co-educational secondary school with close to a century of history.

The school's motto is "Seek to Grow, Strive to Excel, Serve with Honour," reflecting its focus on continuous learning, personal development, and community contribution. SSS runs an Applied Learning Programme (ALP) centred on STEM, with a particular emphasis on the Future of Transportation and practical applications in ICT. Its Learning for Life Programme (LLP), called Project Ablaze, focuses on Community Youth Leadership and encourages students to take on active roles in serving the wider community.

Admission Process

Entry to SSS at Secondary 1 follows the MOE posting exercise, which places students based on their PSLE Achievement Level (AL) scores. For the 2025 intake, the indicative cut-off points for non-affiliated students were 15 to 22 for Posting Group 3, 23 to 24 for Posting Group 2, and 26 to 28 for Posting Group 1. These figures are based on the previous year's posting results and may shift annually depending on applicant numbers and PSLE outcomes.

SSS also participates in the Direct School Admission (DSA) scheme, which allows Primary 6 students to apply for a place before PSLE results are released. DSA categories at SSS are typically linked to its ALP and LLP programmes, and may include areas such as sports, arts, leadership, and academics. Applications are submitted through the MOE DSA portal, which generally opens around the middle of the year.

The school fully implements Full Subject-Based Banding (SBB), meaning that from Secondary 1, students can take individual subjects at G1, G2, or G3 levels according to their strengths, rather than being placed into a fixed stream. SSS does not offer an Integrated Programme; all students follow the O-Level track, with pathways to Junior Colleges, Polytechnics, or the Institute of Technical Education after graduation.

Curriculum and Academic Programme

SSS follows the national secondary curriculum set by MOE. Core subjects include English Language, Mathematics (Elementary and Additional), the Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics), and Humanities (Social Studies paired with Geography or History). Elective subjects available at upper secondary level include Art, Design and Technology, Food and Consumer Education, Principles of Accounts, Computing, and Pure Sciences, among others. Under Full SBB, students have the flexibility to take subjects at different levels to match their abilities.

The school's ALP in STEM provides hands-on learning opportunities in areas such as programming, 3D modelling, and drone technology, giving students practical exposure to fields relevant to future industries. Students at SSS have participated in national competitions in robotics and ICT, and the school has maintained steady academic results in Mathematics and the Sciences.

For students at SSS who would benefit from additional support in Mathematics, DeepThink is a math tuition centre offering structured programmes aligned to the O-Level syllabus, which can help reinforce classroom learning and build confidence in the subject.

Facilities and Co-Curricular Activities

The SSS campus in Hougang includes classrooms fitted with interactive technology, science laboratories, computer labs, a library, a multi-purpose sports hall, and dedicated spaces for the arts. The school has also invested in ICT infrastructure to support its ALP coding and programming activities.

Co-Curricular Activities (CCAs) are a compulsory part of student life from Secondary 1. The school offers CCAs across four categories:

Sports: Basketball (Boys), Netball (Girls), Football (Boys), Floorball (Mixed).

Uniformed Groups: Girl Guides (Girls), National Police Cadet Corps (Mixed), Red Cross Youth (Mixed), Scouts (Boys), National Cadet Corps Land (Mixed).

Visual and Performing Arts: Choir (Mixed), Modern Dance (Girls), Malay Dance (Girls), English Drama (Mixed), Concert Band (Mixed), Chinese Instrumental Ensemble (Mixed).

Clubs and Societies: Audio Visual Aid (Mixed), Infocomm Technology and Computing (Mixed), Programming and 3D Modelling (Mixed).

CCA participation contributes to character development and may also support DSA applications for students with particular strengths in a given area.

Student Life and School Culture

The culture at SSS is grounded in values of honour, excellence, and care for others, which are reinforced through daily routines, assemblies, and Values in Action (VIA) community service projects. Class sizes typically range from 35 to 40 students, and each class is supported by form teachers who oversee both academic progress and pastoral care. The school also provides access to counsellors for students who need additional support.

Student well-being is addressed through programmes on mental health awareness, peer support initiatives, and resilience-building workshops. The school day generally follows a pattern of academic lessons in the morning and CCA sessions in the afternoon, with time built in for reflection and personal development.

For students entering Secondary 1, the transition from primary school involves adjusting to a broader range of subjects, longer school days, and greater independence. SSS runs orientation programmes to help new students settle in and build friendships early. Parents can support this transition by helping their child establish consistent study routines and encouraging participation in school activities from the outset.

Yes. SSS is a government co-educational school that enrols both boys and girls. It operates as a single-session school.

The Ministry of Education does not publish official rankings for secondary schools in Singapore. Each school has its own combination of programmes, CCAs, and strengths. When evaluating schools, it is more useful to look at specific factors such as curriculum offerings, CCA options, and school culture rather than seeking a single ranking number.

Based on the most recent posting exercise, the indicative Achievement Level (AL) cut-off points for non-affiliated students were: Posting Group 3 at 15 to 22, Posting Group 2 at 23 to 24, and Posting Group 1 at 26 to 28. These figures can change from year to year depending on demand and cohort PSLE results. The MOE SchoolFinder website provides the most current data after each PSLE cycle.

The school offers English Language, Mathematics, Additional Mathematics, Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics), Humanities (Geography, History, Social Studies), Mother Tongue Languages (Chinese, Malay, Tamil, including basic levels), Art, Design and Technology, Nutrition and Food Science, Principles of Accounts, Computing, Music, and Physical Education. Subject combinations may vary by cohort and are updated on the school's curriculum page.

CCAs at SSS include sports such as Basketball, Netball, Football, and Floorball; uniformed groups including Girl Guides, NPCC, Red Cross Youth, Scouts, and NCC Land; performing arts groups such as Choir, Modern Dance, Malay Dance, English Drama, Concert Band, and Chinese Instrumental Ensemble; and clubs including Audio Visual Aid and Infocomm Technology. All Secondary 1 students are required to participate in a CCA.

As a government secondary school, SSS charges Singapore Citizens a standard fee of $5 per month plus $10 in miscellaneous fees, totalling $15 monthly. Permanent Residents pay a higher school fee of around $440 per month plus miscellaneous fees, while International Students pay higher rates that include GST. Fee schedules are reviewed periodically, so it is advisable to check the MOE website for the latest figures.

SSS accepts DSA applications in areas typically aligned with its Applied Learning Programme and Learning for Life Programme. Interested students should check the MOE DSA portal or contact the school directly for the specific talent categories available in each intake year. Applications are generally submitted through the central MOE portal.

SSS does not have formal affiliations with any primary school. This means there is no priority admission for students from a particular feeder school. All applicants are assessed based on their PSLE scores and the choices they submit during the posting exercise.

O-Level subjects include Additional Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Geography, History, Literature in English, Principles of Accounts, and Mother Tongue Languages (Chinese, Malay, Tamil). Subject combinations are designed to prepare students for post-secondary options such as Junior Colleges and Polytechnics. The school's curriculum page has the most current listing of available combinations.

Yes. SSS has implemented Full Subject-Based Banding (Full SBB) from the 2024 Secondary 1 cohort onwards. Under this system, students take subjects at G1, G2, or G3 levels based on their individual strengths, replacing the previous Normal and Express streams. This gives students greater flexibility in tailoring their academic programme.

The LLP at SSS is called Project Ablaze and focuses on Community Youth Leadership. Through this programme, students participate in community service initiatives and develop leadership skills. The programme is integrated with CCAs and the school's broader character education framework.

The ALP at SSS is centred on STEM, specifically the Future of Transportation and real-world applications in ICT. Students engage in hands-on activities such as programming, 3D modelling, and working with emerging technologies. The programme is designed to develop problem-solving abilities and expose students to skills relevant to future careers.

The school can be reached by phone at 6385 1589 or by email at [email protected]. Further information is available on the school's official website.
