How DeepThink supports Singapore Sports School students

  • G1, G2, and G3 students are in separate classes, each covering the content and exam format for that stream

  • O-Level, N-Level, and SEC exam preparation built in from S3, matched to the stream your child is sitting

  • E-Math and A-Math taught in separate classes from S3 onwards

  • S1 to S5 coverage so your child can stay with DeepThink for their entire secondary journey without switching centres

What your child gets at DeepThink

Secondary Math is not one-size-fits-all. A G1 student preparing for the SEC exam needs completely different content from a G3 student heading for A-Math. We keep streams in separate classes so every session is relevant.

Frequently asked questions

Clear answers for parents

Does my child's stream affect which class they join at DeepThink?

Yes. G1, G2, and G3 students each have their own class, so every lesson matches the exact syllabus and exam format your child is sitting.

My child is doing okay in S1/S2 but I'm worried about the jump to S3. Is it too early to start?

S3 is where most students hit a wall — the syllabus gets significantly harder, A-Math is new, and SEC exam (or O-Level for the current Sec 4 cohort) prep begins. Students who build strong foundations in S1–S2 handle that jump far better. Starting early is the highest-leverage move a parent can make.

When is the right time for a secondary student to start tuition?

S1 is ideal — algebra gaps from the start of secondary compound quickly and are harder to fix later. That said, students who join in S3 or S4 can still benefit significantly from targeted exam preparation.

What makes DeepThink different for secondary students?

Stream-specific classes. Every lesson, worked example, and past-year paper is matched to your child's stream.

School Overview

Singapore Sports School (SSP) is a specialised independent school established to develop student-athletes who aspire to represent the nation in competitive sport. It is the only school in Singapore dedicated entirely to long-term athlete development alongside a structured academic programme. The school enrols students at the secondary and post-secondary levels and operates as a co-educational, single-session institution with boarding facilities on its 40-hectare campus in Woodlands.

At the post-secondary level, SSP offers the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) as its primary academic pathway. Students may also pursue customised polytechnic diplomas — a Diploma in Business from Republic Polytechnic or a Diploma in Business Studies from Ngee Ann Polytechnic — designed with flexible pacing to accommodate training schedules. The school's through-train pathway allows selected student-athletes to progress directly from secondary to post-secondary programmes without sitting for the GCE O-Level examinations, similar in structure to the Integrated Programme offered at other schools.

SSP's enrolment stands at approximately 400 secondary students and 100 post-secondary students. The student-to-teacher ratio is around 1:12, which supports individualised academic attention alongside demanding training commitments.

Admission Process

Singapore Sports School does not participate in the Joint Admissions Exercise (JAE) and does not have traditional PSLE cut-off points. All admissions are conducted through the Direct School Admission (DSA) process at both the secondary and post-secondary levels.

Applicants are assessed primarily on sports talent and potential, with endorsement from the relevant National Sports Association where applicable. Academic readiness is also considered. The application process involves submitting an electronic application form, after which shortlisted candidates attend sports trials and interviews. Placement tests may be administered depending on the programme.

For post-secondary entry into the IBDP, mid-stream applications are accepted. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to handle the academic demands of the IB curriculum alongside their sporting commitments. Detailed application steps and timelines are published on the school's admissions page each year.

School fees for Singapore citizens in the IBDP (IB Year 5 and 6, based on 2024/2025 rates) are S$712.50 per module, with eight modules per year. Boarding fees of S$512.50 per module apply where relevant, along with supplementary fees of S$680 per year and variable enrichment fees. Fees for Permanent Residents and international students are communicated after shortlisting, and a refundable deposit of S$2,000 is required for non-citizens.

Curriculum and Academic Programme

The IBDP at Singapore Sports School follows the standard IB framework, covering six subject groups: languages, sciences, mathematics, the arts, individuals and societies, and studies in language and literature. Students select subjects from these groups with flexibility to align choices with their sporting schedules and academic interests. The curriculum emphasises inquiry-based learning and real-world application, with particular attention to how analytical skills can be applied in areas such as sports performance data.

In the 2024 IBDP cohort, the school recorded a 100 per cent pass rate, with all graduates qualifying for admission to local and overseas universities. Around 65 per cent of the cohort scored 38 points or above out of 45. Distinction rates across subjects (scores of 6 or 7) have consistently remained above 85 per cent between 2021 and 2024. In Mathematics specifically, approximately 90 per cent of candidates achieved a score of 5 or higher. Students choose between Mathematics Analysis and Approaches (AA) at Higher or Standard Level, depending on their academic goals.

Graduates have secured places at NUS, NTU, and universities abroad, with around 40 per cent entering NUS or NTU and approximately 30 per cent receiving scholarships. The school received the MOE School Excellence Award in 2023.

For student-athletes looking to strengthen their mathematics foundation alongside the IB curriculum, DeepThink is a math tuition centre that offers structured programmes aligned to IBDP Mathematics, which some SSP students have found helpful for consolidating key concepts.

Facilities and Co-Curricular Activities

SSP's campus spans 40 hectares and is purpose-built for the dual demands of competitive sport and academic study. Academic facilities include classrooms fitted with interactive technology, a library with digital learning resources, and science laboratories equipped for IBDP practical work. The campus also houses wellness centres that provide mental health and recovery support for athletes, along with boarding dormitories with round-the-clock study supervision.

The school runs 26 sports academies, which form the core of its co-curricular programme. Academy Programme sports at the post-secondary level include Badminton, Bowling, Fencing, Football (boys), Netball (girls), Shooting, Swimming, Table Tennis, and Track and Field. Individual Programme sports — such as Artistic Swimming, Golf, Gymnastics, and Wushu — are supported in partnership with National Sports Associations. Several of these programmes have produced national-level results, including national championship titles in swimming and SEA Games qualifiers in track and field.

Beyond sport, students can participate in activities such as the Mathematics Society (which runs olympiad preparation), Robotics, Drama, and Scouts. Leadership development is supported through the Athlete Ambassadors programme. In 2024, SSP teams claimed 15 national titles across various disciplines.

Student Life and School Culture

Life at Singapore Sports School is shaped by the goal of developing student-athletes who perform at high levels in both sport and academics. The school's culture centres on resilience, discipline, and holistic growth. Boarding is a significant part of the SSP experience, fostering a close-knit community where students live, train, and study together. The residential environment supports structured routines that help students balance intensive training with academic responsibilities.

Character development is embedded throughout the school programme, with an emphasis on self-management, leadership, and service. Students take part in overseas competitions, training exchanges, and service learning trips that broaden their perspectives and develop global awareness. The Athlete Ambassadors programme provides further opportunities for student leadership and community engagement.

Pastoral care is provided through dedicated staff and wellness services, recognising the unique physical and psychological demands placed on young competitive athletes. The school's approach aims to prepare graduates not only for university and professional sport but for long-term personal and professional success.

Scholarships are available at the post-secondary level for Singapore citizens in the IBDP and polytechnic programmes. The Platinum and Gold tier scholarships cover school fees, boarding and meal costs, and provide cash grants and funding for overseas trips, based on sports achievement and conduct. Additional scholarship opportunities include the Temasek Foundation Scholarship for Sports and the Spex Scholarship for high-performance athletes.
