About Tao Nan School

Tao Nan School is a co-educational primary school in Singapore. One of the six Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan schools. How DeepThink supports Tao Nan School students

  • Lessons follow the MOE Primary Math syllabus exactly — the same topics, heuristics, and model-drawing methods your child uses at Tao Nan School

  • Small group classes so your child can ask questions, get feedback, and is never lost in the crowd

  • From P5 onwards, every class is structured around PSLE technique — not just content, but how to show working clearly and pick up method marks

  • Parents are kept in the loop on what was covered and where their child needs more practice — so you're never in the dark between sessions

  • Tao Nan School has a Gifted Education Programme (GEP) — GEP students receive enrichment-level support that goes beyond the standard PSLE syllabus

What your child gets at DeepThink

Each weekly session builds directly on the last. Your child works through new concepts, revisits gaps, and practises exam-style questions — in a group small enough that the teacher actually knows them.

Frequently asked questions

Clear answers for parents

Does DeepThink follow the same syllabus my child is on at Tao Nan School?

Yes. All Singapore primary schools follow the MOE Primary Math syllabus, and our P1–P6 classes are built around that curriculum — the same topics, the same model-drawing and heuristics approach, and the same exam format your child sits at Tao Nan School.

How will I know if my child is making progress?

Parents are kept informed on what was covered and where their child should focus. We also flag any persistent gaps as soon as we spot them — not just before exams.

When should my child start tuition?

There's no single right answer, but earlier is generally better. Gaps in foundational topics like fractions and ratios compound as children move through primary school. A free trial class is a good way to find out where your child actually stands.

What makes DeepThink different from other math tuition centres?

Small group classes, parents kept in the loop on progress, and a curriculum focused on the exact skills MOE examiners test — including how to structure solutions, not just whether the answer is correct.

School Overview

Tao Nan School was founded on 18 November 1906 by the Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan, making it one of the oldest primary schools in Singapore and the country's first modern Chinese-medium institution. It opened with 36 students at its original North Bridge Road location, relocated to Armenian Street in 1912, and adopted Mandarin as its language of instruction in 1916 — a first among schools in the Straits Settlements.

As a Special Assistance Plan (SAP) school, Tao Nan places strong emphasis on bilingual proficiency in English and Higher Chinese. The school is also a designated centre for the Gifted Education Programme (GEP), which provides an enriched curriculum for high-ability learners from Primary 4 onwards. Its Applied Learning Programme (ALP) centres on STEM through Game Design and Making, while the C3@TNS framework develops Critical, Creative, and Computational Thinking skills across all levels. The E2K Mathematics Programme uses inquiry-based methods to deepen conceptual understanding and mathematical reasoning from Primary 1. The school marked its centenary in 2006 and celebrated its 115th anniversary in 2021 with a focus on innovation in teaching and learning.

Admission Process

Enrolment at Tao Nan School follows the standard MOE Primary 1 Registration Exercise. Phase 1 is reserved for children who have a sibling currently studying at the school. Phase 2A gives priority to children of alumni, staff, or parents who have served as parent volunteers. Phase 2B is open to children whose parents are endorsed by the school's church or clan association, or who are active grassroots leaders in the community. Phase 2C is the open category available to all Singapore citizens and permanent residents.

When applications in any phase exceed available places, balloting is conducted. Priority in balloting is given first to Singapore citizens, then to permanent residents, with distance from the school (within 1 km or between 1 km and 2 km) used as a further tiebreaker. Parents apply online through the MOE P1 Registration portal during the designated registration window and need to provide supporting documents such as the child's birth certificate and proof of residential address. Historical vacancy and balloting data is published by MOE and can help parents assess competitiveness for each phase.

Curriculum and Academic Programme

Tao Nan School follows the MOE primary curriculum, covering English Language, Mathematics, Mother Tongue Language (Higher Chinese, given its SAP status), Science (from Primary 3), Social Studies, Art, Music, and Physical Education. The school's SAP designation means students study Higher Chinese Language as their Mother Tongue, with a curriculum that integrates Chinese cultural appreciation into daily learning.

The Gifted Education Programme (GEP) is available from Primary 4 for students identified through the national GEP screening and selection tests. GEP students follow an enriched syllabus that goes beyond the standard curriculum in depth and breadth. For mathematics specifically, the E2K Mathematics Programme engages students in inquiry-based problem solving aimed at building higher-order thinking skills. The school's PSLE cohorts have historically performed well, with strong results in Mathematics and bilingual subjects.

The ALP in STEM — focused on Game Design and Making — gives students hands-on experience with technology and computational thinking from Primary 1 through Primary 6. This is complemented by the C3@TNS framework, which weaves critical and creative thinking into lessons across subjects. Students looking to build additional confidence in mathematics outside school hours may benefit from structured support at a specialist centre such as DeepThink, which offers programmes aligned to the primary math syllabus.

Students have also performed well in external competitions, with recent achievements including High Distinction awards in the Raffles Mathematical Olympiad and Gold awards at the National Mathematical Olympiad of Singapore (NMOS).

Facilities and Co-Curricular Activities

The school's campus at Marine Crescent includes modern classrooms with interactive learning technology, a library, science laboratories, and dedicated spaces for STEM and computational thinking activities. Outdoor areas and sports facilities support physical education and active learning.

Tao Nan offers more than 20 Co-Curricular Activities (CCAs) for students across Primary 1 to Primary 6. Sports CCAs include Badminton, Basketball, Netball, Sailing, Track and Field, and Wushu. Performing arts groups comprise the Chinese Orchestra, Choir, and Guzheng Ensemble. Uniformed groups such as Scouts and Brownies are available, along with clubs including the Art Club and Physical Science Club. For Primary 1 and 2 students, modular CCA sessions introduce a range of activities in a low-commitment format, allowing younger children to explore different interests before selecting a formal CCA.

The school's Learning for Life Programme (LLP), known as ENRICH@TNS, focuses on Sports and Outdoor Education. It aims to develop resilience, teamwork, and a sense of community responsibility through structured outdoor experiences and service-learning projects integrated into the school calendar.

Student Life and School Culture

Tao Nan School operates as a co-educational, single-session primary school serving students from Primary 1 to Primary 6. The school's SAP identity shapes much of its cultural life, with regular activities that promote appreciation of Chinese heritage, language, and traditions alongside a broad-based English-medium education.

The school provides support for students with special educational needs through designated Special Educational Needs Officers, and runs the P1 TRANSIT programme to help new Primary 1 students adjust to the primary school environment. Pastoral care and values education are woven into the school day, with an emphasis on character development and community involvement.

Parent engagement is encouraged through the Parent-Teacher Association and various school events. As a government-aided school, fees follow MOE's standard schedule for aided schools, and financial assistance schemes are available for families who qualify. The school community includes a strong network of alumni who maintain connections with the institution through the Hokkien Huay Kuan and school events.
